Rep. Janette L. Garin

The doctor is in the house when the tragedy happened.

Dr. Garin hails from Baybay, Leyte and a scion of an influential political family, the Veloso-Petilla-Loreto Clan. She started her political career as the first SK Provincial Federation President (SKPFP) of the Leyte. She met Mayor Richard Garin, then a Provincial Board Member of Iloilo, in one of the assemblies of Philippine Board Members Association of the Philippines (PBMAP). The rest is history.

She pursued her medical studies despite moves to upset her as SKPFP. This became the subject of local media's commentaries. But no, nothing will come between her goal to become a doctor, not even marriage to an affluent husband.

In the Batasan bombing, her resolve to become a doctor found one of its reasons. More lives could have perished had no immediate attention been given to the victims. Amidst the chaos, politicians braved the threat to their lives and helped carry the victims. But in the end, only the doctors can attend to the victims.

We all have a place in history. The likes of Senators Chiz Escudero and Peter Cayetano had it during the impeachment complaints. Representative Janette Loreto Garin, had it during the Batasan bombing.
