Typhoon Yolanda: The Future for the Philippines
The aftermath of Typhoon Yolanda revealed how vulnerable our country is and every Filipino for that matter.
In terms of security, our government is ill-equipped, we the citizens - incompetent. Aside from the many natural disasters happening, eg Bohol Earthquake, Typhoon Yolanda in Leyte and flooding in Luzon, there's the unrest in Zamboanga with thousands of displaced residents. The rising prices of basic commodities add to the burgeoning burden of every Filipino.
If our government officials will gather suggestions from its citizens, here are my own:
On Relief Operations
1) Relief operations for any forecasted natural disaster like typhoon, tsunamis, tidal waves, volcanic eruptions should be PREEMPTIVE. Why does the government wait for the road to be scattered with trees and electrics posts to give out relief when it can do so without hassle prior to the natural disaster? Affected areas will not go scavenging or looting if they've got food to eat. They'll repair their houses instead.
On Peace and Order
2) Require all able-bodied male citizens upon reaching 18 years old to serve two (2) years of military training the same with other countries like US, Great Britain and South Korea. This country should make use of its massive population.
3) Mobilize Fishermen as extensions of the Philippine Navy. Set a clear plan of action when invasion takes place at any point of the country.
4) By all means, the Philippine Government should equip our military forces with what are needed to do their job well.
On Education
5) Instead of focusing on the language of instruction (mother tongue phenomenon), DepEd can probably focus in on the SUBSTANCE of instruction. Teach children life skills such as disaster preparedness, how to protect themselves from abuse and self-reliance modules.
On Housing and Environment
6) Land use plan should be enforced. This practice of giving dole outs to squatters should be stopped. People should not make highways out of forests and forests out of highways.
