Renewable Energy: Mandatory Solar Panels for Commercial Buildings

According to authorities, the Philippines is facing a probable shortage of power supply on the summer of May 2015. The granting of emergency powers to President Aquino is currently being debated.

Problems like this should not be left to the government alone to solve. Businesses, the highest consumer and the sector most affected by power outages should do their share.

Moreover, the Philippines should make mandatory the use of  technologies using renewable energy sources of which this country is very blessed - sun, wind and water.

The high cost of using these resources can yield immense benefits on our environment. The government in imposing mandatory solar panels in all commercial buildings can reduce the traffic in the power grids. It should also provide direct returns of investment to companies in terms of tax credits and exemptions for their compliance.

SOLAR POWER SYSTEM

Solar Power System should be integrated in every commercial buildings. This can be quiet costly, but considering the rising prices in electricity, the investment will be regained by the savings in power bills over time.

If solar panels are installed in rooftops in all commercial buildings, in Metro Manila alone, there will be a sizeable reduction in power consumption from the current providers. In other countries, some buildings are  designed and built with walls made of solar panels.

WIND POWER TURBINES

Commercial buildings can make use of wind power too as an alternative to solar panels. This technology of using wind to generate power is picking up interest in the face of costly power generation.

HYDRO POWER

The Philippines has yet to maximize this renewable source of energy. The process of converting kinetic energy into electricity does not emit greenhouse gases, therefore, will not contribute to global warming.

The government must have a clear-cut plan and policy direction on how to achieve sustained energy supply for the coming years. Given this condition, the private sector will not hesitate to invest to support the energy sector.
